We’re proud to be advocates for vulnerable populations in our local South Florida communities, which include a variety of groups that benefit both directly and indirectly from our music therapy and the various programs we provide. One of the groups we work with includes those struggling with dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory loss challenges.
For those facing memory-related obstacles, comfort and enjoyment are some of the most important elements that can be incorporated into their daily lives. It’s common for these groups to suffer from anxiety, confusion, and frustration on a frequent basis due to the nature of their mental health and memory struggles, which is why it’s so crucial that we add joy and fun to their lives whenever possible.
Memory care facilities are a valuable resource for families hoping to help a loved one find safety, comfort, and consistency, which is why The House of Music Therapy team couldn’t be more thankful to work with some of South Florida’s greatest memory care locations. Through close collaboration with Arden Courts, Baker Senior Center Naples, and Vi at Bentley Village, we’re better able to serve those who can benefit most, specifically those facing memory loss challenges.
The Benefits of Music Therapy in Memory Care
It’s hard to have a bad time while enjoying your favorite song or participating in a musical group activity. We’ve seen firsthand the power of a catchy tune, familiar beat, or engaging rhythm, and love bringing these tools to the memory care facilities we work with.
When it comes to memory loss, musical intervention can be therapeutic thanks to its impact on the brain. Not only does music help us regulate our emotions and find peace. According to this article from The Brain Center, music therapy has also been shown to reduce agitation, improve communication, and even improve caregiver relationships for patients.
Through music therapy, we’re able to add enrichment to the lives of our patients through physical, mental, and social attention, nurturing cognitive needs through therapeutic approaches and our professional expertise.
Our programs at each facility are customized to meet the specific needs of our patients. While most programs happen in a group setting, our experience with memory loss patients allows us to adapt during group sessions to address specific patient needs, facilitate collaboration among the group, or allow patients to indulge in their favorite styles and songs. This personalized approach to music therapy fills patients with a sense of pride, and we consistently leave them with smiles on their faces.
We’re proud to share these kind words from Arden Courts ProMedica Memory Care in Fort Myers, “Here at Arden Courts all we do is “Memory Care”. Our residents are at different stages of [memory loss-related] illness but were all able to benefit from the program. The residents were engaged in the activity and worked on such skills as social, listening, reading, memory, and physical. Every resident left with a smile on their face!”
Expanding Our Reach
We’re on a mission to make music therapy even more accessible to those who can benefit, which is why we’re so passionate about providing free resources to our community (through our blog, YouTube channel, etc.) and raising awareness about the availability of our expertise and services through partnerships and programs.
In addition to memory care facilities, we also collaborate with a number of care facilities serving hospital patients in recovery, vulnerable or low-income populations and families, schools and educational centers, and more.
We primarily serve South Florida communities, which allows us to reach Lee, Collier, Sarasota, Oranga, and De Soto Counties and their surrounding areas. As we continue to grow and expand, our ability to reach more patients grows too. On a mission to provide the highest quality services, treatment, and care to our patients, we champion them on their journey to reach their full potential and enjoy each day.
For memory care patients, this is especially true, as we’re able to bring comfort and joy to their lives during an otherwise difficult and sometimes scary time. Seeing our patients thrive in their memory care centers thanks to hands-on and comprehensive programming brings us immense pride. We know that as more memory care centers adopt programs that bring light and positive energy to their residents and patients, we can contribute to a healthier and happier place for everyone.
